The Three Types of Weres
(Please note: this isn't my writings, and has more to do with therianthropy;however, since these also seem to apply to weres, I have posted it here.)
Weres display three distinct kinds of 'wereness'. These three types of therianthropy are best discribed as how their bond with their animal spirit is. The most religious like type is that of the Animal Spirit Guide Type. This bond means that the were feels they have a close bond with an Animal spirit. This particual belief is derived from Shamanism. Many weres share this kind of wereness with one of the other two, but some carry this one only. In this case the animal is a seperate spirit, that guides them on a path to enlightenment and discovery of the world around them. These weres see mostly dream shifting and astral shifting as their main shifting. Some expereince mental shifts as well. this type often has more than one phenotype.
The second kind of 'wereness' is the half human half animal spirit. This basically implies that the person has a half and half spirit. This can be as drastic as if it was cut in half, or if described their spirit would have aspects of both.( biped) This type of were generally deals with humanity a little better than most as they are till partially human. They hals an animal 'side' if you will. Their animal half allows them to understand and look at things in a slightly different manner, but the animal is them they are the animal, they are not seperate entities in a single body, but rather a combination of the two. Most weres of this type expereince quite a bit of mental shifting as the animal half can become dominant over the human half. Most weres of this type apire to physically shift as most inately understand what being an animal is like, and deeply desire to be that way, but would like to be able to turn back to a human form. This type may expereince some dream shifting as well as astral shifting if they astral plane. This type may have an animal spirit guide. (see above) that is differnt from their phenotype. This type normally only has one phenotype.
The third form of 'wereness' is that best described as 'animal born into wrong body' type. these type are restless spirits, although possessing human form and speach, having been harshly forced into human tabboos and societies trappings, these weres are the worst adjusted. They know they are a wolf ( or whatever) trapped in a human form and long form the forests and lands of their native habitats. They are given to mental shifting and long for the day when they can take what they feel is their rightful form. these types almost always have only a single phenotype, although they may have a spirit guide.
Now you may have noiced my use of the phrases m-shifting or p-shifting. These are describing the different kind of 'shifting' a were does from his human 'facade' to his were nature. M-shifting, or mental shifting is the most common form of shifting. normally this involves the were falling into their phenotypes thought patterns and behaviors. This can be as subtle as growling, deepening of the voice, shift in body language to as drastic as inability to walk correctly ( lack of tail and on two feet..) inability to talk beyond the phenotypes own. ( squaking, growling, barking, meowing) Normally this includes a total shift of thinking, thought becomes primal, instincts are more predominant, senses become hightened. Some weres even expereince increased strength, better/poorer vision, increased hearing or smell, and other such phenonmina. Mental shifting normally does not produce many actual physical manufestations, but seems to be the leader to the all mighty, yet elusive physical shift.
Weres are very unique creature, often overlooked as savage beasts, but truly weres are perhaps more civilised than humans and the animal within gives them a unique connection with the world around them. In a world where stereotypes are the order of the day, they stand appart, gazing at the world with different eyes and thoughts. They see much of what others don't and are a powerful creature in their own right.

A Were Creed
We of the wild race
Both of human and animal face
Do declare in this creed
A way of thought word and deed.
On territory do declare
Your ways, thoughts, and presence there.
If the land belongs to another,
Respect the lands of the other.
Take only what you need
Famine and folly comes from greed.
Protect thy cubs and thy mate
For within them your future you stake.
Deny not you soul, or way of being
Simply for what others are seeing
If to thy heart you are true
Happiness will surely find you.

Re: The Three Types of Weres
That creed is epic, and totally true, not just for weres but for all people.
